RGP Takes Part in the First-Ever Russia Africa Economic Forum

On 23 and 24 October 2019, Russia‑Africa Summit and Economic Forum were held in Sochi. RGP managing partner Suren Gortsunyan and corporate practice counsel Konstantin Mineev attended the Forum.

This has been an unprecedented event in the history of Russian-African relations. Over 6,000 Russian and foreign participants and journalists attended the Forum, including over 1,000 foreign and 1,400 Russian business representatives and over 1,900 foreign and 300 Russian official delegations. With 45 African states being represented by the heads of State and heads of Government, all 54 countries of the Africa continent officially participated in the Summit and the Forum.

At the core of the Forum’s business agenda were the discussions to promote cooperation between Russia and Africa. The Economic Forum opened with a plenary session entitled “Russia and Africa: Uncovering the Potential for Cooperation.” The President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and President of the Arab Republic of Egypt Abdelfattah Al-Sisi, who co-chaired the Russia–Africa Summit, spoke at the Forum.

A number of breakthrough agreements, contracts and MoUs were signed. The value of all executed non-confidential agreements totalled RUB1.004 trillion.

At the end of the Summit, the participants adopted a final declaration setting out the key goals and objectives agreed to further enhance cooperation between Russian and Africa in a range of vital areas, such as politics, safety, economy, science and technology and arts and humanities.

Suren commented, “RGP’s team has experience working in 31 African country; historically, we have always taken account of the latest geopolitical trends and will be delighted to further support the development of business and economic relations between Russian and Africa.” Konstantin added, “It was a landmark event for us with a number of important meetings and exciting networking. I am positive that our firm’s experience including experience of working with companies from Africa will be helpful in the field of cooperation between Russian and African businesses.”

The next Russia–Africa summit is scheduled to be held in three years.
