On 1 July 2021 Sergey Komolov, Managing Partner of King & Spalding in Moscow, Ilya Zotkin, counsel, Stanislav Rzhaksenskiy, associate, and Irina Volkova, legal secretary, will join RGP, with more potentially to follow.
Earlier this year, King & Spalding announced that it was closing its Moscow office this summer, noting “shifts in the global energy market and other commercial considerations.”
RGP is delighted to welcome this team of leading individuals from K&S’s team joining the firm this summer (additional details will be disclosed at a later date). RGP is also in discussions to take over the premises of King & Spalding to continue organic expansion of its office at Tsvetnoy Boulevard in the heart of Moscow.
Sergey Komolov, who joins RGP as a partner in its corporate practice, has 25 years of experience in corporate and corporate finance matters, having also represented major Russian and foreign clients in arbitration and court proceedings. Sergey has co-managed several high-profile cases in London, New York and other jurisdictions. Counting some of the biggest corporations among his clients, he has also been involved in groundbreaking mergers and acquisitions, finance matters, restructurings and other complex transactions both in Russia and abroad. Previously Sergey worked at the World Bank’s Legal Department and was General Counsel to one of Russia’s largest banks. Before practicing law, Sergey had a career in the Russian diplomatic service. He has authored numerous articles on legal and political issues for leading international and Russian publications.
Sergey has been recognized by the leading international legal directories, including, but not limited to Chambers Global, Chambers Europe and The Legal 500. Sergey holds LL.M. from Georgetown University and J.D. from Moscow State Institute for International Relations – both with distinction. He is admitted to practice in the State of New York and Russia.
Ilya Zotkin, who joins RGP as a counsel in its corporate practice, has over 20 years of experience in corporate and finance matters as well as corporate disputes. Ilya has advised a number of high-profile Russian and international clients across a variety of sectors on corporate law, mergers and acquisitions, real estate transactions and disputes strategies. Prior to joining the firm, Ilya worked in the legal division of a major Russian coal mining company and in the Moscow offices of international law firms.
Ilya has been recognized by a number of influential legal directories – Chambers Europe and The Legal 500 to name a few. Ilya is Russian qualified and holds J.D. from Moscow State University.
Co-head of RGP dispute resolution practice Ilya Rybalkin has spent four years working together with Sergey Komolov and Ilya Zotkin at Hogan and Hartson LLP.
RGP Managing Partner Suren Gortsunyan comments:
“We are staying strong and growing despite the winds and are delighted to welcome the new team on board. The arrival comes at the time when we have transformed from a smaller size boutique firm to become a serious player not just by the caliber of disputes our clients entrust us to handle, or our market-leading financial performance, but also by the breadth of our human talent and the number of lawyers on our team. I am particularly excited that this increase is supported by the upward trends in our corporate practice, which is complementing our pre-eminent dispute resolution capability.”
Sergey comments upon his appointment: “I am very excited to join the RGP team which has an excellent reputation and track record. We will stay on best friends terms and continue to work together with King & Spalding on several matters while at RGP.”
