RGD lawyers take part in English Law Week Central Asia 2023

Anthony Walker, Partner and Head of English Law Practice, and Timur Abushakhmanov, Senior Associate with Dispute Resolution Practice of Rybalkin, Gortsunyan, Dyakin and Partners (RGD), took part in English Law Week Central Asia 2023.

English Law Week Central Asia is an annual legal conference that discusses the latest trends in developing and applying English law in the CIS. Attended by leading practitioners from the regional law firms, this year the event was organized by the Eurasian CIS Legal Professionals' Forum and the British-Kazakh Law Association (BKLA), who decided to hold plenary sessions in three major cities in the region – Tashkent, Astana and Almaty.

During the Tashkent session, participants discussed the development of the local legal regime and the growing popularity of the TIAC Court of Arbitration, while the sessions in Astana and Almaty focused on the significance and application of English law in Kazakhstan.

Anthony Walker and Timur Abushakhmanov spoke at all three sessions as invited experts and were among the event's main speakers. They shared their experience with the participants and discussed the main trends in the field.

Anthony Walker spoke to the guests about establishing the arbitration court's jurisdiction, unfair prejudice claims and insolvency considerations for claimants. Timur Abushakhmanov devoted his speeches to application of the English doctrine of frustration to contracts with force majeure clauses and to the duty of the party to the contract with sanction clause act rationally in terminating the contract (also known as the Braganza Duty). Their participation in the event shows the high demand for the RGD lawyers’ expertise in the application of English law in the CIS countries.
