Kazan Legal Week 2024, a forum organized by a Russian legal media Pravo.ru, was held in Kazan on May 22–24. The event's speakers and participants discussed the most pressing issues related to providing legal support to businesses.

Yuri Makhonin, Partner of Dispute Resolution Practice at Rybalkin, Gortsunyan, Dyakin and Partners law firm (RGD), spoke at a session titled “Top Chart of Court Opinions in 2023–2024.” He discussed the trend towards an increase in the number of disputes involving foreigners.

The question that often arises during such disputes is which court to choose: a Russian one, a foreign one, or an international arbitration.

Russian courts are rapid and effective; moreover, they do not apply the provisions on economic sanctions.  However, there is a risk that a foreign court refuses to deem their decision valid and enforceable. With an international arbitration, the procedure is flexible and transparent, but cases take a long time to be heard, and there may be difficulties with hiring consultants who specialize in foreign law.

The landmark disputes of recent years regarding the application of prohibitive measures by Russian courts included those between Gazprom and service companies; RusChemAlliance and Linde; and a Russian citizen and Amazon.

As in the previous years, the two-day legal marathon brought together top managers from Russian and international companies, as well as partners of leading law firms. In addition to participating in round tables and panel discussions, the guests held a golf tournament.
