Sargis Grigoryan

Sargis Grigoryan – a partner at RGD International Armenia.

He is an Armenian-qualified and Russian-speaking lawyer. He has represented clients in nearly 50 arbitrations under ICSID, ICC, LCIA and UNCITRAL rules, including investment treaty disputes. Sargis also frequently advises clients in court proceedings and has particular experience in matters involving enforcement of arbitral awards in the CIS region. His particular expertise has been in construction and energy related disputes, involving parties from the CIS, as well as in shareholders' disputes. Sargis Grigoryan has extensive experience giving evidence in foreign courts and arbitral proceedings as an Armenian law expert.

He has appeared as counsel in numerous proceedings at the European Court of Human Rights and other international bodies.



Prior to joining RGD Sargis headed GPartners Law Firm, operated since 2008, where he primarily focused on international arbitration and dispute resolution.

Before that Sargis worked in International Arbitration Group at Hogan Lovells, London. Earlier Sargis headed Legal Team at Armenian-European Policy and Legal Advice Centre funded by the European Commission and worked as a counsel at the Armenian Development Agency (the Government of Armenia).

Landmark engagement experience

  • Representing an Armenian contractor in a Dubai-based ICC arbitration relating to a hospitably project in the UAE (implemented by the Dubai Royal Family) under English law

  • Representing an electricity producer in Artsakh in a Paris-based ICC arbitration under the CISG relating to termination of a supply agreement after the 2020 war

  • Acting for Armenian investors in a shareholders dispute in VIAC arbitration proceedings against a Luxembourg domiciled investment fund under English law

  • Advising Russian and German investors in potential ICSID arbitration proceedings against Armenia in connection with the expropriation of property in Yerevan

  • Acting for a local investor in a series of litigations against a Canada-based international mining company arising out of a share purchase agreement and shareholders agreements in the mining sector

  • Advising Canadian and Lebanese investors in ICSID arbitration proceedings against the Government of Armenia in connection with the expropriation of waste management concession

  • Acting as a local expert in LCIA proceedings involving allegations of unlawful termination of shareholding relationship in the banking industry and money laundering

  • Advising an Italian investor (including two IFs) on corporate restructuring matters to manage investment risks in the energy sector

  • Worked at WilmerHale (London) on various commercial and investment arbitration matters e.g., an ICC arbitration against a Kuwait based financial institution

  • Advised a local manufacturer on joint venture matters with an European financial institution

  • Advised an Armenian state-owned power plant in relation to two different sets of claims against GE Power and Alstom/Cobra in ICC proceedings

  • Advised UNDP Armenia on investment protection matters under development impact bond schemes

  • Worked with WilmerHale on issues related immunity of Heads of State under the Criminal Code of Armenia

 Advisory services

  • Advised the Ministry of Justice of Armenia on the Foreign Investments Act and Public Private Partnership Act Bills

  • Drafted the new Judicial Code of Armenia; appointed by the Council of Europe

  • Jointly with the British Institute of International and Comparative Law and Baker & McKenzie New York, advised the World Bank on strengthening dispute settlement services in the South Caucasus region

  • Advised CARE International on cross-border cooperation matters between Armenia and Georgia

  • Acted for the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe on delivering trainings for the members of parliament related to human rights issues

  • Acted for the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development on codifying the principles of corporate governance into the Armenian legal framework (led a government task force on state-owned enterprises)
